THE SIMPLER WAY TO FIND SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS

LA Referencia’s Search Engine is a tool that centralizes and facilitates the search for scientific publications in the region. There, researchers, teachers and students find articles and theses of masters and doctorate from almost one hundred universities of the eight countries that make up the network.

Quickly and easily, it is possible to search for articles by country, by area, by title, by author or by institution. It also offers the appointment of each article according to international standards and the results can be shared on the most recognized social networks, with just a click.

HOW DO WE DO IT?

We have worked previously in organizational and technical processes that guarantee the quality of the data, focusing on several phases. To do this, we rely on a technological platform for metadata harvesting developed by the team (LR Harvester) and other open software component (including VuFind). The solution is found both in the central node and in the nodes of each country. The stages are:

We agreed

Countries sign regional agreements to define common policies and quality standards with the objective of building a federated network of scientific documentation repositories.

We harvest

We periodically collect the metadata records offered by the repositories of the network through its national node, keeping the contents offered in the portal updated.

We validate

From LA Referencia we generate mechanisms to ensure the quality of the published information, according to agreed quality guidelines.

We federate

We carry out a process of content integration and indexing, providing the users with a unified search service under quality criteria.

We offer

In the public search portal, we facilitate the retrieval of information and the access to the full text in open access in the original institutional repository. It provides a system of statistics on the contents and its impact.

WHO WE ARE

SHARING AND GIVING VISIBILITY TO SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTION IN LATIN AMERICA

The Latin American Network for Open Science, or simply LA Referencia, through its services, it supports national Open Access strategies in Latin America and Spain through a platform with interoperability standards, sharing and giving visibility to the scientific production generated in institutions of higher education and scientific research.

From the national nodes, scientific articles, doctoral and master's theses are integrated, coming from more than a hundred universities and research institutions from the ten countries that now form LA Referencia. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, Panama, Peru and Uruguay.

This experience is based on technical and organizational agreements between public science and technology agencies (Ministries and Oncyts ) of the member countries, together with RedCLARA. LA Referencia was born through the Cooperation Agreement, signed in Buenos Aires in 2012, which reflects the political will to offer in open access the scientific production of Latin America as a regional public good with emphasis on the results financed with public funds.

OUR TEAM

LA Referencia is possible thanks to a work network formed by the Board of Directors (appointed by the authorities of Science and Technology); the Technical Committee (responsible for the operation of the national nodes), the administrative support of RedCLARA and a network of collaborators in the region committed to Open Science.

The central team that collaborates in this joint is composed of:

Robinson Zapata Pino. President of LA Referencia. Representative of Panama, Head of the Department of Scientific and Technological Information at the National Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Innovation (SENACYT) of Panama.

Patricia Muñoz. Vice President of LA Referencia. Representative of Chile, Deputy Director of Networks, Strategy, and Knowledge at the Research and Development Agency (ANID) of Chile.

Lautaro Matas. Executive and Technical Secretary of LA Referencia. Developer of the LA Reference Software Platform (LR Harvester).

Federico Cetrangolo. Administrative Manager of LA Referencia. Economist. Student of the Master in Administration and Politics at the University of San Andrés.

Guillermo Murillo Goussen. Software Development and Support of LA Referencia. Computer Engineer of Vice-Rectory for Research of the University of Costa Rica.

Johan Espinoza Rojas. Responsible for communication of LA Referencia. Journalist and researcher in user experience design (UX). Master in Cognitive Sciences (Universidad Costa Rica).
