In this review paper, the variety of interactions established between human cultures and animals is approached through the perspective of ethnozoology. As a branch of ethnobiology, ethnozoology investigates the knowledge, uses, and significance of animals in human societies. The following subjects are discussed: definition, foundations and history of ethnozoology, study areas, applicability of ethnozoological knowledge, and ethical aspects of research. As a scientific approach, ethnozoology is useful as a valuable interpretative tool when the interactions between humans and animals of a given region are to be studied. No presente artigo de revisão, a variedade de interações que as culturas humanas mantêm com os animais é abordada pela perspectiva da Etnozoologia, ramo da Etnobiologia que investiga os conhecimentos, significados e usos dos animais nas sociedades humanas. São discutidos os seguintes temas: definição, fundamentos e histórico da etnozoologia; áreas de estudo; aplicabilidade do conhecimento etnozoológico; e aspectos éticos da pesquisa etnozoológica. Como abordagem científica, a etnozoologia pode ser uma ferramenta interpretativa valiosa quando se estudam as interações entre humanos e animais em uma determinada região.
