Sumario:The essential oil of the aerial parts of Lippia graveolens H.B.K. (Verbenaceae) was examined by GC and GC-MS. Nine constituents were identified. Carvacrol, a-terpinyl acetate, m-cymene, thymol and B-pinene were found to be the major components. The oil exhibited antibacterial activity against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus; Staphylococcus epidermidis, Bacillus subtilis, Sarcina lutea) and Gram-negative bacteria (Shigella boydii, Vibrio cholerae No-01, Vibrio cholerae (clinical strain), Vibrio cholerae (isolated from water), Vibrio cholerae Tor, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter agglomerans, Enterobacter aerogenes; Yersinia enterocolitica, Salmonella typhi).
