| Sumario: | Mexico is interested in promoting the implementation of carbon capture forestry projects, and the Mexican Carbon Standard NMX-AA-173-SCFI-2015 provides the principles and criteria for carrying them out. This paper presents a methodological approach to fulfill NMX-AA-173-SCFI-2015 by determining eligible areas for carbon capture, as well as an estimate of the carbon capture potential by considering the carbon density of the surrounding natural forest vegetation. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), satellite information and auxiliary data were combined to determine the potential capture in the eligible areas inside the Priority Region for Conservation in Xilitla (RPCX), where have been identified a surface of 2,136 ha with a permanent non forest condition in at least the past five years. The results indicate this area is divided in 55 properties, including ejidos, indigenous communities, and small holders that are within the RPCX, of which only five ejidos are viable for carbon capture projects. The Ollita del Pino ejido is one of them and has a total eligible surface area of 83 ha with an estimated carbon capture potential of 10,061 TCO2 over the long term (≥ 20 years). The possibility of entering a restoration project under the Mexican Carbon Standard NMX-AA-173.SCFI-2015 was explored there, in which a participatory workshop was held that calculated a carbon forestry restoration project would reap an estimated $1,171/ha-1y-1. After the workshop, surveys were carried out to verify the full, free and informed consent (CPLI) of the ejidatarios to participate in the project, as indicated by the safeguards established by the norm. However, the proposal did not arouse the interest of the ejidatarios, the main cause of rejection was the uncertainty of converting their farm land to forest, and if would be worth sacrificing the food security enjoyed. Other obstacles were the lack of support from governmental and non-governmental organizations, the lack of economic resources and investors for the seed capital required, and the poor dissemination of information about such carbon capture projects and their market potential. |
