The Spanish, of course, condemned the rebellion as an act of treason against the King and disobedience against God. Sobre el sentido religioso del movimiento de Túpac Amaru se ha escrito poco. Sin embargo, parece claro que uno de los móviles más importantes que inspiraba esta gran rebelión indígena y que formaba el trasfondo de todas las acciones de José Gabriel Condorcanqui fue un fuerte sentimiento mesiánico, donde se mezclaban y se confundían elementos incaicos con elementos cristianos. Los españoles, por supuesto, condenaron la rebelión como un acto de traición al Rey y de desobediencia contra Dios.
